A Hallucinatory Reckoning: "Cabo Days"
Cabo Days is a disorienting and darkly comic meditation on consciousness, betrayal, and the unreliable nature of perception. The narrator's journey from airport to resort unfolds as a fever dream—vendors morph into jackals, a mysterious girl with a pink ribbon materializes and vanishes, and Hermann Hesse's literary legacy haunts every waking moment. The work brilliantly collapses the boundary between hallucination and reality, forcing readers to question what they've witnessed alongside the narrator himself.
The Cabo setting becomes more than mere backdrop; it transforms into a palimpsest where revolutionary history and consumer excess collide, mirroring the narrator's internal fragmentation. The introduction of "Dennis" at the end and the whale breach provides a masterful resolution—a moment of shared witness that anchors the narrator (and reader) to tangible reality, yet leaves ambiguity intact. The final Jungian reflection suggests that perhaps the distinction between inner and outer worlds matters less than the collision itself.
This is a sophisticated, unsettling work that lingers long after the final page.
